How do you choose handlebars for a BMW Airhead custom bike?

Diamond Atelier answers this question with a cockpit developed for the rider and the individual motorcycle. We define the riding position first, then choose handlebar reach, rise, width and sweep to suit both comfort and the bike's visual proportions.

OUR FITTING APPROACH

The rider defines the starting point

For a BMW R80, R100R or R100GS project, we begin with the owner's intended use and preferred posture. Handlebar height is only one variable. Seat position, foot controls, reach and wrist angle must work together as a single riding triangle.

We then choose a position for that particular rider and base motorcycle. The result may look different on a road-focused R100R and an R100GS-inspired concept. Diamond Atelier does not treat one fashionable bar shape as the answer for every build.

COCKPIT INTEGRATION

A deliberate position, a coherent silhouette

Once the posture is defined, we set the handlebar within the whole design: tank line, headlight, seat, instruments and controls. A taller bar can be the right choice, but it must still belong to the motorcycle when viewed from the side.

We plan the control layout and the routing of cables and brake lines around the chosen position. Full steering movement and clearances are checked on the actual machine. That integration is what turns a preferred hand position into a resolved Diamond Atelier cockpit.

A PERSONAL COMMISSION

One cockpit for one motorcycle and rider

Our solution is individual design and engineering rather than a universal handlebar recommendation. We develop the riding position and visible cockpit together, so comfort, function and Diamond Atelier's design language support each other.

A commission begins with a conversation and a moodboard of motorcycles, architecture, fashion, art and materials. It tells us how the rider wants the motorcycle to feel and what character it should express. We accept only a small number of projects each year, typically planning at least 12 months ahead.

COMMON QUESTIONS

BMW Airhead handlebar questions

Will a higher handlebar make my BMW R80 more comfortable?

We would assess your complete riding position before changing the bar. On an individual Diamond Atelier build, we choose rise, reach, width and sweep in relation to your seat and foot position—not height in isolation.

Can I use an R100GS-style enduro handlebar on another Airhead?

We can interpret the upright intention for an individual project if it suits the motorcycle. We check mounting, controls, cables, brake lines, clearances and full steering movement before deciding on the final cockpit.

Should I decide on the handlebar before other custom work?

We define the intended riding position early, then coordinate the tank and seat relationship, controls, instruments and cable routing with it. This keeps the finished motorcycle comfortable and visually coherent.

Where can I see Diamond Atelier BMW builds?

Alongside the R100R-based Mark II Evo, Groot uses a BMW 248-type frame and rebuilt R65 Boxer, while Urban21 is based on the modern BMW R nineT.
