BMW Airhead crankshaft: lighten or balance?

When crankshaft lightening and fine balancing may fit a BMW two-valve boxer engine project, and what is assessed first.

What is the difference between lightening and balancing?

Lightening changes the mass distribution of the crankshaft. Balancing addresses how the rotating and reciprocating parts work together. These are related but separate decisions; less mass by itself is not proof that an engine will run more smoothly or make more power.

When might the work make sense?

It can be considered during a planned rebuild when the engine concept, intended use and other rotating components are known. A road-oriented two-valve boxer may call for a different compromise from a short-duration sporting project. Diamond Atelier evaluates the complete engine before proposing either operation.

What is inspected first?

We identify the crankshaft and related parts, examine condition and wear, and document relevant masses and the desired operating character. The extent of any material removal needs an engineering boundary. An individual quotation follows inspection; there is no universal 'fast' crankshaft specification for every R80 or R100.

Will it cure vibration?

Not automatically. Vibration may also come from mixture, ignition, compression differences, mounts or other rotating parts. It is sensible to establish the engine's baseline before assigning the symptom to the crankshaft. Fine balancing cannot promise vibration-free running under every load.

How can I enquire?

Tell us the BMW model, engine configuration, current symptoms and objective. If the engine is already apart, list the available components and measurements. Explore Diamond Atelier's engine services or discuss the project with us.

Owner questions

The topic appears in Airhead crankshaft rebuild discussions and R100R balance questions. They show why the actual parts and goal matter.
