What is dual ignition on a BMW two-valve boxer?
A dual-ignition conversion gives each cylinder a second spark plug. On a suitable BMW Airhead engine, this changes how the mixture is ignited across the combustion chamber. The conversion involves more than adding two plugs: the cylinder heads, ignition system, coils, wiring and timing must work as one engineered system.
When is it worth considering?
The case depends on the engine. Combustion-chamber geometry, displacement, compression, fuel, existing ignition and intended riding all matter. A conversion may be considered during a cylinder-head or complete engine rebuild, particularly when other engine changes make the ignition strategy important. A standard engine does not automatically gain a noticeable benefit.
What is included in the engineering assessment?
Diamond Atelier reviews the donor engine and cylinder heads before specifying the scope. We determine whether the additional plug position and head work are suitable, then match the ignition control, coils, leads and timing strategy to the actual motorcycle. The completed configuration must be checked under operating conditions. Component selection and quotation follow the individual assessment.
Is a second plug a guaranteed power upgrade?
No. The purpose is an appropriate combustion and ignition strategy for the complete engine. Power, fuel consumption, starting and resistance to knock cannot be promised without measurements on that engine. An existing running problem should be diagnosed before treating dual ignition as the answer.
Does every BMW 2V use the same kit?
No. Model, year, existing equipment and engine changes affect the parts and work required. Diamond Atelier offers the conversion as an individually specified service rather than a universal kit.

What if an R65 runs badly after conversion?
Do not assume that the second plug itself is the problem. Verify the original engine condition, the actual ignition timing and curve, both coils, leads, plugs, earths and that each cylinder fires as designed. Check carburetion only after the ignition system has been measured. A workshop must diagnose the individual bike; there is no safe universal timing setting.
Technical reference
Silent Hektik’s BMW 2V ignition information illustrates that ignition systems distinguish between single- and dual-plug configurations. It is a reference for the principle, not a promise that every Diamond Atelier project uses that system.
