BMW R100R or R100GS for a custom build?

How the BMW R100R and R100GS differ as custom-build donors, and why the Mark II Evo begins with the R100R.

What is the practical difference?

The BMW R100R and R100GS belong to the same air-cooled, two-valve boxer family, and both use a Paralever rear end. They serve different starting points. The R100R is a roadster; the R100GS is conceived for mixed-surface travel. For a custom build, evaluate the complete donor rather than assuming the shared engine family makes the motorcycles interchangeable.

Why does Diamond Atelier use the R100R for the Mark II Evo?

The R100R gives the Mark II Evo its road-focused proportions and Paralever chassis. The finished motorcycle is designed around that platform, including its stance, wheel and brake package and the way the rear frame meets the bodywork. The Mark II Evo is therefore an R100R-based model, not an R100GS presented under another name.

When might an R100GS be the better donor?

An R100GS can make sense when the idea is rooted in its own character and intended use. Its wheels, suspension geometry and equipment must be considered as a system. A design that works on the R100R should not be copied onto an R100GS without checking clearances, brakes, rear-drive ratio and rider position. Diamond Atelier reviews GS proposals as individual projects when the concept fits our design language.

Can R100R and R100GS parts be exchanged freely?

No. Shared BMW 2V heritage does not guarantee direct fit. Model year, fork, wheel, brake, final drive and frame details determine what can be used. Record the donor's actual parts and measurements before ordering a wheelset, rear shock or bodywork.

How should a commission begin?

Tell us which motorcycle you have, what riding experience you want, and why a particular donor appeals to you. A moodboard of motorcycles, architecture, art, colours and details helps us understand the direction. Explore our BMW Airhead guide, then share your idea with Diamond Atelier.
